MOTHER’S DAY
May 13th, 2007
Int. There are a number of different "Mother’s " spoken of in the Bible.
1.
2. Babylon is considered the "mother" of all false religions.
3. The mother is twice the influence that the father is in communicating Christian beliefs.
A. Youth have a much clearer concept of Jesus Christ than they do of God the Father.
4. There is Mary, the mother of Jesus....
5. (Exo 20:12) "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."
You only have one mother, patient, kind and true
No other friend in all the world will be so true to you.
For all her love and kindness she asks nothing in return;
Should all the world forsake you, to mother you can turn.
Many sleepless hours you've caused her when you were cross or ill;
Many tears she's shed for you, though grown you cause them still.
So every time you leave her or whether you come or go,
Give her a kind word and a kiss–it's what she craves I know.
You only have one mother, none else can take her place,
You will never know how much you need her, till you miss her loving face.
Be careful how you answer her, choose every word you say;
Remember she is still your mother though she may be growing gray.
You only have one mother, O take her to your heart;
You cannot tell how soon the time when death you two will part.
Many heartaches you've caused her while you were oput in sin;
Many a prayer she's breathed for you, that God would bring you in.
Let her know you love her dearly, cheer and comfort her each day;
You cannot find another mother when she has passed away.
When death has claimed her mortal body, and she's at rest above with God,
Remember all her loving counsel, and the prayers for you she's made to God.

6. We speak of: He has hit the "MOTHER LOAD", speaking of a gold mine.
A. He that has a good mother is richer still!
B. On Good Morning American, Friday, May 7th, 1999, they said that stastistics show that the average "Mother", if paid the going salary, would earn about $50.000.00 per year, based on all that she does.
1. She cooks three meals per day, washes dishes three times a day, makes up 3-5 beds per day, washes 2-3 loads of clothes per day, hangs out 2-3 lines of clothes (if no dryer) per day, bathes 2-3 children each evening, doctors the children and the husband, doctors one skinned knee, kisses one badly hurt toe, stops two fights, convinces her little boy that he is not the ugliest child in school, convinces her daughter that it is not a disgrace to wear braces, telling her daughter, no you may not go out with that boy tonight, goes to the grocery store, the drug store, works in the garden, mows the lawn, attends the P. T. A. Meetings, cleans the house, takes out the trash, irons clothes, cleans the windows, polishes the furniture, runs errands for the husband, visits the shut-ins and ten thousand other things, and when the husband comes in; he wants to know: "Why isn’t my supper ready?"
7. Notice those of honorable mention in the Bible.
A. (Gen 24:60) "And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them."
B. (Mat 27:56) (Among those that followed Jesus to Calvary, ministering unto him were) "Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children."
C. (John 2:1) "And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:"
D. (Acts 12:12) "And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying."
We read of the healing of Simon Peter’s Mother in law. (Mark 1:30) "But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her."
1. Peter’s mother-in-law doubtless helped with the preparation of the Sabbath meal in the home that day.
2. Spurgeon wisely commented on this passage as follows: "But notice that what this good woman did was very appropriate. Peter’s wife’s mother did not get out of bed and go down the street and deliver an address to an assembled multitude. Women are best when they are quiet. I share the apostle Paul’s feelings when he bade women be silent in the assembly. Yet there is work for holy women, and we read of Peter’s wife’s mother that she arose and ministered to Christ. She did what she could and what she should. She arose and ministered to Him....."
8. Mrs. C. R. Knowles, The Reader’s Digest, Jan. 1952, p. 79. Her New Year’s resolutions: "Try and be more patient with Mother."
9. (Luke 7:15) "And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he (Jesus) delivered (gave) him to his (widowed) mother."
a. (Luke 7:13) "And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not."
Ill. Imagine telling a widow woman whose son is lying dead in a casket ‘to weep not"
10. Abraham Lincoln, (whatever else may be said about him), quoted from the Bible frequently.
a. His mother died when he was but 9 years old.
b. He and his sister Sarah buried their mother without a funeral service.
c. Weeks later, they employed the services of a Baptist itinerant preacher, Rev. David Elkin, to come and hold a memorial service for them.
d. His mother was deeply religious, and he would later said: "All that I am, all that I hope to be, I owe to my angel mother--blessings on her memory."
11. Clement recognized that women are equal to men in everything though different in vocation and function.
a. To be a mother and a housewife is not to be a drudge or a drone.
b. In God's sight there can be no higher calling.
Ambrose, who believed that the two sexes were complementary, admonished husbands not to dominate his wife: "Let a husband guide his wife like a director, honor her as a partner of his life, share with her as a joint heir of grace" (Epistula 63. 107).
12. Spanish Proverb. " There is no mother like the mother that bore us."
13. Coleridge. said: " A mother is a mother still, the holiest thing alive."
14. It is said of Monica, Augustine's mother. "Never did mother struggle more earnestly than she. From her son's nineteenth to his twenty-eighth year, while he was revelling in all sin's foulness, she persisted in resolute hope and fervent prayer. In his twenty-ninth year she was still `'instant in prayer ," when he left her and journeyed to Rome. From Rome he went to Milan, and thither the praying mother followed him. And there the answer to her prayer and reward of her Christian influence came. In Ambrose's preaching contrition came to Augustine, and that event made Monica's happiness complete."
15. Someone has said: "I think it must somewhere be written, that the virtues of the mothers should be visited on their children as well as the sins of the fathers."
A. She was just an old-fashioned mother,
She did not pretend to be "smart,"
To care for her home and her dear ones
Was the wish that was first in her heart.
We were raised by the old-fashioned methods,
So sparsely employed today,
And when we so richly deserved it,
We were "spanked" in the old fashioned way.
She taught us the old-fashioned virture,
"A good name is far better, " she'd say
"Than all of the wealth of the nation.
And truth is the best any day."
She believed in the old-fashioned Bible,
She trusted in old-fashioned prayer;
She told us that Jesus would hear us
If we'd speak anytime anywhere.

16. Someone else has written, "THE BEATITUDES OF MOTHERS"
Blessed are mothers...who did without for us, they will be rewarded.
Blessed are mothers...who lost sleep when we were sick, they will find rest.
Blessed are mothers...who taught us how to pray, they will share God's kingdom.
Blessed are mothers..who comforted us, they shall be comforted.
Blessed are mothers...who taught us right from wrong, they will know justice.
Blessed are mothers...who shared with us the meaning of peace, they shall know peace.
Blessed are mothers...who taught us the importance of loving God and each other, they shall see God.
17. To MAMA Mom, As I Have Grown, So Have My Appreciation and Love for You
"Time flies,"everyone says.
It's frightening sometimes
to look in the mirror and see
the evidence of that.
So often, we don't take a moment
to say what's in our hearts,
and then, when it's too late,
we wish we had.
I'm taking a moment now, Mom,
to tell you this...
When I was a child, there was
so much I couldn't understand,
like how hard you worked
and how much you sacrificed
for our family.
There were dreams you had
to put on hold
and dreams that never came true.
You must have felt frustrated
sometimes, no doubt,
and at times even full of despair.
Yet you never gave less
than your best to us.
You didn't have an exciting career
or beautiful clothes.
You never traveled the world
or drove a fancy car.
Every day, you looked after us,
worried about us, fed us,
and loved us,
without expecting anything in return.
You see, Mom, I know now
and understand
that you actually gave me two lives:
my own... and yours.

Conclusion: "Faith of our Mothers"
Faith of our mothers, living still
In cradle song and bedtime prayer;
In nursery lore and fireside love,
Thy presence still pervades the air,
Faith of our mothers, living faith.
We will be true to thee till death.
Faith of our mothers, loving faith,
Fount of our childhood's trust and grace,
Oh, may thy consecration prove
Sources of a finer, nobler race;
Faith of our mothers, loving faith,
We will be true to thee till death.
Faith of our mothers, guiding faith,
For youthful longing, youthful doubt,
How blurred our vision, blind our way,
Thy providential care without.
Faith of our mothers, guiding faith,
We will be true to thee till death.
Faith of our mothers, Christian faith,
In truth beyond our stumbling creeds,
Still serve the home and save the Church,
And breathe thy spirit through our deeds;
Faith of our mothers, Christian faith,
We will be true to thee till death.
