“THE LORD’S SUPPER”. (1 Cor 11:20; (Mt. 26:17-30; Ex. 12:1-27)
June 13th, 2004
Int. Jesus left two ordinances..(1 Cor 11:2) "Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you."
1. In (Mt. 26:17-30) , we see our Lord’s third and final year in the upper room with His disciples.
I. CONSIDER THE PICTURE ..
A. THE BREAD IS A PICTURE OF HIS PERFECT HUMANITY.
1 (Exo 12:8) "And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it."
2. Unleaven Bread. (Exo 12:15) "Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel."
3. The Roman Catholic Wafer is insufficient. (John 6:35) "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."
4. It is to be observed...(Exo 12:17) "And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever."
a. (Luke 22:19) "And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me."
b. (1 Cor 11:24) "And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me."
c. (1 Cor 11:25) "After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me."
5. It is to be eaten. (Exo 12:18) "In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even."
a. Leven Bread was forbidden. (Exo 12:19-20) "Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. {20} Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread."
b. (1 Cor 5:7-10) "Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: {8} Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. {9} I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: {10} Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world."
B. THE WINE (The Cup) Blood of the Grape.
Int. (Deu 32:14) "Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape."
Note: The Greek word for Wine is “Onios”
1. In Remembrance of Me. (1 Cor 11:25) "After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me."
2. Notice three Ingredients here: PASSOVER---BLOOD----WINE.
3. The Wine is the Antitype of the “PASSOVER BLOOD”
a. The Catholic Church gives the bread, (wafer), but no longer gives the Wine (Which symbolizes the Blood of Christ)
b. In the Wafer they teach the false doctrine of “TRANSUBSTANIATION.”
Note: TRANSELEMENTATION, n. [trans and element.] The change of the elements of one body into those of another, as of the bread and wine into the actual body and blood of Christ; transubstantiation.
Note: By teaching this, they crucify Christ daily.
C. THE SACRIFICE... (Two Thoughts on this )
1. A sacrifice is a propiatory satisfaction rendered unto God.
a. To placate God’s Holy Wrath...(To appease)
b. To appease His Righteous Hatred of sin.
c. To pacify the Claim of His Divine Justice.
d. To settle the Demands of His Divine Law.
Note: “God is Light as well as Love.”
e. (Heb 9:26) "For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself."
f. (Heb 10:12) "But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;"
g. (Eph 5:2) "And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour."
(1) A sacrifice is a propiatory satisfaction rendered unto God.
(2) A sacrifice is an offering of thanksgiving and praise.
(a) Because Christ has propiated God on our behalf, we can offer “a Sacrifice of Praise” (Heb 13:5)
Note: How can we sacrifice praise? It should be like a spring.
(b) (Psa 27:6) "And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD."
(c) (Jonah 2:9) "But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD."
Note “The passover Lamb was a sacrifice first to God, and second, food for those sheltered underneath it’s blood.”
II. THE PURPOSE OF THIS ORDINANCE.. (The picture, now the Purpose)
Int. (1 Cor 5:8) "Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."
A. IT IS COMMANDED..(1 Cor. 5:8) “Let us keep the feast....”
B. THERE IS THE COMMUNION (Matthew 26:17-30)
1. (Jesus gave thanks) This is a time for praise; not prayer.
C. THERE IS COMMERATION ..As the Passover commerated Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, so the “Lord’s Supper” commerates our deliverance from sin.
1. (1 Cor 11:26) "For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come."
III. THE PLACE....(Local Church) (The picture, the Purpose & now the Place)
Int. (1 Cor 11:33) "Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another."
A. THE BIBLE RECORDS SEVEN TIMES WHEN THIS FEAST WAS OBSERVED.
1. In Egypt. (Exo 12:11) "And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover."
2. In the Wilderness....(Num 9:5) "And they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month at even in the wilderness of Sinai: according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel."
3. In Canaan.....(Josh 5:10) "And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho."
4. In the days of Hezekiah...(2 Chr 30:15) "Then they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the second month: and the priests and the Levites were ashamed, and sanctified themselves, and brought in the burnt offerings into the house of the LORD."
5. In the days of Josiah..(2 Chr 35:1) "Moreover Josiah kept a passover unto the LORD in Jerusalem: and they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month."
6. After the return from Babylonian Captivity..(Ezra 6:19) "And the children of the captivity kept the passover upon the fourteenth day of the first month."
7. By Christ and His Apostles...on the same night in which He instituted the Lord’s Supper.
a. (Luke 22:15) "And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:"
Note: “As the passover began in Egypt, so Christ Who is our “True Passover” (1 Cor. 5:7) was called out of Egypt. (Mt. 2:15)
(1) (1 Cor 5:7) "Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:"
(2) (Mat 2:15) "And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son."
IV. THE PEOPLE WHO ARE TO PARTAKE OF THIS SUPPER...(Acts 2:41-46)
Int. We have noticed three things about this ordinance, the Picture, the Purpose, the Place and now the People.
A. They that have gladly received His Word.
B. They that have been Scripturally Baptised...(Immersed upon a Profession of faith in Christ)
C. They that have united with a local Church (local assembly of true believers)
D. Doctrinally Stedfast or sound in the faith.
E. In fellowship (one accord) with that local church. (Acts 2:46)
F. Self-examination is required first.
a (1 Cor 11:28) "But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup."
(1) Are you a “born again” Christian?
(2) Have you been Scripturally baptised?
(3) Are you a member of this local New Testament Baptist Church?
(4) Are you “sound” in the faith?
(5) Are you in “fellowship” with this local assembly?
V. THOSE PROHIBITED FROM THIS SUPPER. (Picture, Purpose, Place, People,)
A. ONE THAT IS CALLED A BROTHER, BUT WALKS CONTRARY TO THE WORD OF GOD.
1. (1 Cor 5:11) "But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat."
2. David said: (Psa 93:5) "Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever."
3. In the hymnal that Spurgeon’s Church used:
Amidst us our Beloved stands,
And bids us view His pierced hands;
Points to His wounded feet and side,
Blest emblems of the Crucified.
What food luxurious loads the board,
When at His table sits the Lord!
The wine how rich, the bread how sweet,
When Jesus deigns the guests to meet!
If now with eyes defiled and dim,
We see the signs but see not Him,
Oh, may His love the scales displace,
And bid us see Him face to face!
Our former transports we recount,
When with Him in the holy mount,
These cause our souls to thirst anew,
His marr’d but lovely face to view.
Thou glorious Bridegroom of our hearts,
Thy present smile a heaven imparts:
Oh, lift the veil, if veil there be,
Let every saint Thy beauties see!
